Countryside

Staufen is located at the foot of the southern Black Forest at the end of Münstertal (a Black Forest valley).

The valley of the river Neumagen directly merges into the Rhine plain, the foothill area of the Black Forest is less distinctive.

To the north, at the end of the valley, the steeply rising castle hill dominates and, to the south west, the rolling hilly landscape of the Markgräflerland area begins.

Thus, Staufen is located on the boundary of two natural and economic areas; the Rhine plain or the foothill area with the cultivation of cereals, wine and fruit on the one hand and the Black Forest on the other hand, which is today characterised by livestock farming and forestry and was characterised by mining in former times.
